Web Home Page: Covering 1 212 ha, the Ysternek Nature Reserve was set aside to protect montane fynbos (heath) and indigenous forest. Although the larger mammals which occur here, such as leopard, bushpig and bushbuck, are seldom seen, the birdlife is varied and much more visible. The viewpoint offers spectacular views of the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains to the north and the forested coastal plateaus to the south. Location: Extreme south-east of the province; north of Knysna. Access: From Knysna follow the N2 eastwards for 7 km; turn left onto the R339 towards Avontuur and Uniondale; continue for 24 km to the reserve, which is on the left. The R339 becomes graded gravel about 6 km from the N2. Accommodation: None. Other facilities: Short walk through wet high forest at the Dal-van-Varings picnic site and a drive up to a viewpoint. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
